| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description "The bindings in this exhibition were commissioned by two ingenious Scottish booksellers, Kulgin Duval and Colin Hamilton, from twenty-three members of Britain's Designer Bookbinders "to show the impressive range of activity in British bookbinding just now." To this group they added two bindings by the now retired Edgar Mansfield, without whose work they felt the collection would have been incomplete. All the commissioned bindings were completed within a two-year period, a fact which prompted one reviewer who saw them when they were exhibited at Francis Edwards Ltd in London to remark that it was a minor miracle that the project had produced so many masterpieces---and that it had been completed on schedule. My first glimpse of the collection came during a visit to Frenich in the summer of 1974. Though only part of the bindings were finished at the time, it struck me that taken as a group they could provide a most interesting survey of British bookbinding at a remarkably active time in its history, and I suggested that the books should be offered en bloc before being offered separately. This was done and the Lilly Library was fortunate in being able to acquire the entire collection. It makes a splendid addition to our holdings and provides interesting comparison with the Library's selection of contemporary French bindings. To enhance its value as a teaching collection, Kulgin Duval and Colin Hamilton presented to the Library their extensive correspondence with the binders and the sketches and designs which had been submitted to them. A selection from the letters and the designs is included in the exhibition to show how the binder's initial concept developed into the finished product. The exhibition in the Lilly Library was planned and mounted by Jean Kamerman. The catalogue (priced $5.00) which accompanies it was originally published by K. D. Duval and is reprinted here for issue under the Lilly..." [from a brief foreword by William R. Cagle, Acting Lilly Librarian.]
